The Cybersecurity Talent Gap is Widening - Is “Renting” Your Best Alternative?

As we all know, the threat landscape is worsening. While cybersecurity budgets at many companies are increasing but finding talent is getting harder, particularly for midsize and smaller businesses.

An Oct 21, 2022, Wall Street Journal article cites data from ISC2, a cybersecurity training and certification non-profit, that worldwide, there are about 3.4M unfilled cyber jobs. Indeed, several large company CISO’s lament the challenges of recruiting cybersecurity professionals.

If large companies are having these difficulties, it’s likely to be a greater challenge for midsize and smaller business to recruit, let alone retain workers. With a turnover rate of about 20%, does it make sense to pursue the hiring route.

Engaging an experienced cybersecurity consultancy to access (“rent”) the necessary talent is probably the best approach for most companies. The benefits of this approach include ready access to experts, experience across a range of settings, and predictable costs.

Here are some key considerations for choosing the right partner for your cybersecurity needs:

· expertise and experience

· use and advocation of a proven methodology (e.g., the NIST Cybersecurity Framework)

· business-first approach (cybersecurity should advance business priorities)

· problem-solvers

· vendor agnostic

· effective communicators and collaborators

Engaging the right cybersecurity consultancy will lower your risk of a breach as well as ensure you have response and recovery protocols in place.
